2010 Ford Mustang

What makes it tick? For the GT, a thirsty 315-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 that was previously the uprated engine in the souped-up Bullitt special edition. For maximum power and torque, this V-8 slurps premium unleaded at the rate of a gallon every 16 miles in city driving (23 m.p.g. highway). A thriftier alternative is the base Mustang V-6, with 210 horsepower and 17/23 economy on regular unleaded.

What they didn’t say: A faster, louder Mustang may not be exactly the most politically correct new product to introduce, considering the auto industry’s troubles, but it is nevertheless one of Ford’s two core products (along with the new, more-of-everything F-150 pickup, also due out soon). Redesigning the Mustang now also brings it current with the Dodge Challenger and the at-last-to-be-introduced Chevrolet Camaro.

As sales of the popular current model, essentially unchanged since its 2005 introduction, wind down expect the new Mustang to make its appearance in early spring 2009. Prices will hew pretty close to the current range of $20,000-$30,000 for the coupes. A convertible versionh should cost $4,000-$5,000 more.

Volkswagen Red Bull Touareg TDI Trophy Truck

Is it real? It is, if you’re racing in the Baja 1000. This purpose-built Touareg with a VW clean diesel was designed for gravel roads. Its spare tires block out any rear view, but it’s set to take 40-foot jumps and land on its feet.

What makes it tick?
The production Touareg uses a V-6, 3-liter clean diesel producing 221 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque.
For the off-road version, a modified 5.5-liter V-12 TDI clean diesel generates 550 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. Sponsored by Red Bull, the vehicle looked so crazed I wondered if executives might have dropped a few cans of the caffeinated stuff into with the fuel.

2009 Nissan 370Z

Yes, it’s a sixth-generation redesign, with two models for the taking, the Z and the Z Touring

What they said: The Z-car is the “greatest performance value in the world,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager of the Nissan division. But the “most powerful Z ever” hype was followed (all too closely) by, “In these trying times, we see a need to return to our roots,” with a pitch for the 34-mile-a-gallon, $9,990 Versa.

Starting at $29,930, with the coupe on sale in January and a roadster in the 2010 model year.

2009 Ferrari California Spyder

Yup, if unobtainable. It’s not simply an existing model given a special-edition name — this is an all-new model joining the Ferrari lineup — although it does borrow nomenclature from the ’60s California Spyder..

How’s it look? While this economy may leave many of us driving 200,000-mile beaters, at least we’ll enjoy the view of this stunning convertible-only specimen as it blasts by.

What makes it tick: A new direct-injection V-8 that’s mounted in mid-front position — a Ferrari first. The engine makes 460 horsepower, blasting the car from zero-to-60 in less than 4 seconds.

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman

Is it real? Well, Jerry Seinfeld was in the audience at the reveal. And he wouldn’t come to a show about nothing.
What they said: Porsche pulled the wraps off the two cars in Los Angeles because it is “by far the city with the highest population of Boxsters and Caymans,” said Detlev von Platen, president and chief executive of Porsche Cars North America.
What they didn’t say: No date was mentioned for introduction of hybrid models that are expected to arrive. Porsche doesn’t really see the point at this time, since it can accomplish its fuel-efficiency goals by tuning the existing engines.

New boxer engines are the headliners; there’s the base 2.9-liter (it makes 255 horsepower in the Boxster and 265 in the Cayman) and a 3.4-liter with direct fuel injection for the S models (310 horses in the Boxster, 320 in the Cayman). Borrowed from the motor sports world is Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe — you can wimp-out and call it PDK; even the Porsche people do — an optional twin-clutch system that made its production debut in the 2009 911 series.
