2009 ALFA ROMEO 149 GIULIA

Mix one part MiTo with one part 8C Competizione, add a dash of individuality for good measure, and you wind up with the eye-catching Alfa Romeo 149. While it's evident that styling cues from the existing Alfa line-up have been utilised, the 149 combines these elements with a unique rear end to give us a family-friendly Alfa capable of turning heads and delighting owners in one fell swoop.

Should a family hatch be allowed to look this good? Available as a three or five-door, the proportions of the new 149 will ensure that young families are well catered for, without sacrificing the Italian styling and Alfa pedigree.

Power will come courtesy of a 1.4 litre petrol turbo or a range of 1.9 litre diesel engines. With outputs starting at around 90kWs and topping out close to 190kWs, there's sure to be something for every taste and budget. High output models will also benefit from Alfa's Q2 differential to ensure that power gets to ground with minimal fuss.

Expected to go on sale in the UK in the middle of next year with a £16,500 starting price, the Alfa Romeo 149 is sure to win hearts for the Italian marque. That it can be expected to perform (like an Alfa) is simply a bonus. We look forward to getting behind the wheel when the 149 eventually makes its way down-under.
